PREVENTION PROGRAMS

In addition to finding and rescuing people, Search and Rescue Global 1 (SG1) volunteers spend many hours each year teaching the public on how not to get lost, and if lost, how to survive until help arrives. From our experience, most incidents could have been prevented or their affect reduced with a little preparation. Our skilled volunteers have partnered with AdventureSmart to deliver this key message in our local communities. Current AdventureSmart programs include:

Hug-A-Tree and Survive Program

This presentation is aimed at children in Grades K-6. It teaches children how not to become lost in the woods, and what to do if they should become lost.

Survive Outside Program

This presentation is aimed at people aged 12-99. It focuses on Trip Planning and the Code of Responsibility, Training and Tips for safe travel and the 10 Essentials.

Snow Safety Education Program

This presentation is aimed at children in Grades 4-6, teaching ski hill safety and signage, and backcountry information including “Out of Bounds” hazards.

Certified SG1 members give these presentations in either French or English in a verbal format, with the length of the presentation being age appropriate, and supply copies of the “Trip Plan” for use by all persons when venturing into the outdoors. Other materials may also be available.
These presentations can be customized to meet the needs of your group or organization.

Topics can include any combination of the following:
• Outdoor Survival
• How to avoid getting lost
• Helping searchers find you
• What to do when lost
• What to do when you think someone is lost

Other topics are possible. Just ask and we will put something together for you. All presentations are offered at no cost.
For more information, or to book a presentation please email us at prevention@sarglobal1.ca. We are available to speak to schools, scouts, guides, hiking and other interested groups about wilderness safety.
